The University of Virginia, Department of Environmental Sciences and its
Anheuser-Busch Coastal Research Center (ABCRC) announce the establishment of a
Public Seminar Series to be held at the ABCRC in Oyster, VA at 7:00 PM on the
third Thursday of every month.
The purpose of the seminar series is to give the public the opportunity
to learn about the environmental research and management projects being
conducted on the Eastern Shore that are sponsored by the Seaside Heritage
Program along with research projects and environmental monitoring efforts being
conducted at the ABCRC.
Admission to the seminars is free, but seating is limited to the first 50
people. Snacks and light beverages
will be provided. Support for this seminar series is provided by a grant from
the Seaside Heritage Program, a branch of the Coastal Zone Management program,
with additional support from the UVA Department of Environmental Sciences.

Geographical Information Systems (GIS) couple
old-fashioned maps with computer technology. John Porter will discuss the
basic technology and how it is used for ecological research with examples drawn
from the Eastern Shore. He will also provide an overview of softwate
tools, including web-based and free software along with useful data
sources.
John will also present some of the environmental
monitoring data and images collected during Tropical Storm
Ida.
